On May 2, the same day as the incident, Springfield police began their investigation after they were called to Project Woman for a report of an assault. The victim was being transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center, according to an affidavit filed with charges in Clark County Municipal Court.

Police then responded to the hospital to meet the victim.
“Officers observed (the woman’s) clothes to be bleach stained as well as her person to have a heavy odor of bleach about it,” the affidavit says. “She was visibly upset, crying and stating over and over that she could not see out of her eyes.”
Officers also saw injuries on her knees and shoulders, the affidavit says, and she was favoring her right index finger.
“(The woman) stated that she was at home on York Street with her live-in boyfriend “Delaney” Brent (defendant),” the affidavit says. “She said the two have been dating and living together for about two months. Around 11 p.m. on this date, she told Mr. Brent she was going to get her stuff and leave. She said Mr. Brent became upset, grabbed a bottle of bleach and poured it on her.”
She said bleach got into her eyes, according to the affidavit.
“At this time she said Mr. Brent then pushed her down a flight of stairs into the basement of the home. As a result of the fall she broke her index finger on her right hand and sustained a number of abrasions to her body,” the affidavit says.
The woman said she attempted to leave but Brent continued to attack her. She said he grabbed her by her throat and again pushed her to the floor.
“She said he held her there and hit her about the body with his free hand,” the affidavit says.
The woman said she waited in the basement until Brent went upstairs and that’s when she fled the home, the affidavit says.
