Man wanted in jail beating death arrested

The man accused in the beating death of a fellow inmate at the Tri-County Jail in April has been arrested.

Zachary R. Butler, 24, of Richwood, was arrested by a Union County Sheriff’s deputy about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Plain City, according to his jail booking sheet.

Butler was indicted late last week on charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault, reckless homicide and tampering with evidence in connection with the fatal beating of David Piersol on April 5.

A warrant was issued for Butler’s arrest on Friday. He also had an outstanding warrant out of Logan County for failure to appear in court on felonious assault charges related to a September fight in Bellefontaine.

According to police reports, he was being housed at the Tri-County Jail in April pending charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and resisting arrest following an incident in Milford Center where he was spotted driving recklessly and made a rude gesture to an off-duty Marysville police officer and his daughter.

Six hours after being booked into the jail on April 4, he allegedly assaulted Piersol, who was awaiting trial for rape, gross sexual imposition and sexual battery.

Piersol then went to bed, but later fell from his top bunk and was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died April 11.
