Man pleads guilty in crash that killed Urbana woman

A man involved in a three-vehicle crash that killed an Urbana woman last fall has pleaded guilty in the case.

Lloyd J. Eaton, of St. Paris, pleaded guilty to two felony charges of third-degree aggravated vehicular homicide last week, according to the Champaign County Clerk of Courts.

Eaton had been charged with third-degree aggravated vehicular homicide, fourth-degree vehicular assault and two counts of possible drug or alcohol use, according to the indictment record released by Champaign County courts.

He now faces up to more than six years in prison, a $15,000 fine and a permanent suspension of his driver’s license.

Tanya J. Morgan, 38, of Urbana, died in the Nov. 27 crash.

The accident occurred at the entrance to Tractor Supply Company, 1637 E. U.S. 36. Morgan was a front seat passenger in a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII driven by Eaton.

Eaton was in the westbound lanes of U.S. 36 and was turning into the business entrance when the car was struck by a 1998 Dodge Ram driven by Derek Ramsey of Urbana. The impact forced Eaton’s car to spin into a 2015 Toyota Rav4 driven by Lon Peters of Mechanicsburg while it was stopped in the driveway of the TSC entrance.

Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter, Tiffany Wiford, 20, was in the back seat and had to be extricated from the wreckage. She had been flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton and treated for serious injuries.

Eaton was treated and released from Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana, police said.

A sentencing hearing for Eaton is scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Champaign County Common Pleas Court.
