A broom is just a broom: Latest viral challenge debunked

A new internet hoax has taken over and it has made the broom in your closet something special. The challenge states that this is the only time a broom will stand upright by itself.

I hate to rain on the parade, but that simply isn't true. You can balance your broom any time of day, any day of the year!

There is nothing special about the tilt of the earth or gravity this week. The Earth's axis is always tilted around 23.5 degrees. The Earth's gravitational pull on is also still the same at about 9.8 meters per second squared, so that isn't the reason your broom balances either.

Instead, if you are patient, you can balance it because the of the way it is built. The center of gravity it towards the bottom of the broom.

If you can find that and the bristles aren’t too worn down, you can balance your broom whenever you’d like.
