The Operations Director for Developmental Disabilities of Clark County has retired after 41 years of public service, according to a release.

Robert Bender, who has been the operations director since 2009, served 20 years in the United States Navy before moving to New Carlisle to become Service Director in 1999 and was later appointed City Manager of New Carlisle in 2003, a position he held for six years, the release stated.

“I’ve appreciated working with Clark County for the last 21 years,” Bender said. “I’ve spent all of my working civilian life here and have been able to work on a number of wonderful projects.”

Those projects include being on the Transportation Coordinating Committee Board for 20 years, development of the multi-use trail, new water plant, and the downtown streetscape in New Carlisle.

“Working for Developmental Disabilities of Clark County has been the most rewarding civilian job I ever had,” Bender said. “The folks we serve are an inspiration to me.”

During his time at Clark DD, Bender said he was especially proud of modernizing the transportation fleet using Federal grants; and the WestCat service, linking Clark, Greene and Montgomery County with public transportation.

“We are going miss Bob’s knowledge and spirit,” said Will Bagnola, Superintendent of Developmental Disabilities of Clark County. “He has been a valuable member of our leadership team and we appreciate his service.”

Bender and his wife Candy have since moved to Florida, but said they will miss Ohio and all their friends.
