The class was established under the sponsorship of Mrs. Bessie Black Martin, wife of local lawyer Paul C. Martin and one of the founders of the East Side Chapel, a mission church of Covenant Presbyterian.
This photo, taken in April 1902 shows teacher Mrs. Gertrude Boughier with her students, some of whom are identified: Margaret Kennedy, Edith Enisman, John Dolan, Mabel Steinkamp, Robert Scanlan, John Groeber, Mae Lauer, Myer Gross, and Paul Scanlan.
