Police: Springfield man acted in self-defense in Dayton deadly stabbing

A Trotwood man died of stab injuries suffered following an argument on Christmas Eve; however, no one will face any charges, police said.

Dayton police were called just after 7 p.m. to the 400 block of Briarwood Avenue on a report of a stabbing.

“The investigation revealed this incident was preceded by an altercation between the deceased and an acquaintance,” Dayton police Lt. Jason Hall said.

Ty A. Hess, 36, died Dec. 24 from a penetrating stab wound to the chest at Miami Valley Hospital, Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger said. He ruled the death a homicide.

Jeremiah Rothgeb was arrested Monday on a preliminary murder charge after he was arrested in Springfield. He no longer will face charges.

“The details of this investigation were presented to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, and charges were declined based upon a finding of self-defense,” Hall said.
