Demetrius L. Peterson
SPRINGFIELD — Two people were arrested this weekend in connection with the shooting death of a man during an alleged attempted robbery last week, according to court records.
Demetrius L. Peterson, 21, of 245 Brent Drive, and Erik D. Wilson, 27, of 127 N. Jackson Ave., were arrested on charges of felony murder, according to court documents.
They are accused in connection with the fatal shooting of Demarkis L. Jones, 26, on Southern Avenue on Oct. 15.
Peterson reportedly turned himself in Saturday, according to court records.
Police received several tips over the weekend, said Springfield Police Division Chief Stephen Moody.
“Several people, including Mr. Peterson, stepped up and did the right thing,” said Moody.
Investigators believe Jones, Peterson and Wilson forced their way into a home at 214 W. Southern Ave. last Thursday night, demanded money and pistol-whipped a man inside the house.
The man, who the News-Sun has opted not to name, fired two to four shots, hitting Jones, who stumbled outside and collapsed, according to a police report.
Peterson and Wilson reportedly fled the area.
Both men pleaded not guilty Monday morning and remained in the Clark County Jail on $100,000 bond.
