Springfield woman accidentally shoots herself in leg, police say

Springfield police were called after a woman accidentally shot herself in the leg, according to a police report.

Authorities were called to the Springfield Regional Medical Center to take a report of the shooting at about 2 a.m. Thursday morning. The shooting took place at a residence on the 400 block of South Clairmont Avenue, the report says.

“(The woman) stated that sometime around 1:30 a.m. she was with her boyfriend when she heard some noises outside,” the report says.

The woman told police that she had previous issues in the neighborhood and feared someone was attempting to break in, according the the report. “(The woman) advised that (her boyfriend) went outside to check around the residence while she went and obtained her .22 revolver,” the report says.

The woman was holding the revolver when she heard another noise, the report says.

“(The woman) was in the kitchen of her home with the revolver pointing down by her side, slightly towards the front of her body,” the report says. “(The woman then heard another noise from near her residence and became spooked, accidentally firing the gun into her leg.”

The boyfriend drove the woman to the hospital, the report says. The woman was being prepared to be transferred to Miami Valley Hospital when police arrived to the medical center, the report says.

The incident report is classified as an accidental injury and not a criminal violation.
