Springfield mom arrested after officers find toddler living in ‘very dirty’ apartment, police say

A Springfield mother was arrested after officers found a 3-year-old living in an apartment with animal feces, trash and sticky floors scattered throughout the home.

Daun Morrison, 24, was arrested on a charge of child endangering, according to a Springfield police report.

Police began their investigation when they were called to an apartment on the 200 block of Shaffer Street for a welfare check, according to the police report.

“Before officers even entered the doorway, a strong odor of animal feces and urine could be smelled emanating from the apartment,” the report says. “As officers entered the apartment, the odor became stronger. Once at the top of the steps to the apartment, the officer’s boots began to stick to the floor as if some type of substance had been spilled a while ago and not cleaned up.”

The officers found the child being bathed by her grandmother because the child had come into contact with animal feces, the report says.

“The apartment was very dirty throughout,” the report says.

This isn’t the first time Morrison has faced these types of allegations. She pleaded guilty in 2017 to a charge of child endangering. In that case, a 2-year-old was found crawling on a roof and officers found the apartment was dirty with animal feces inside, according to an affidavit filed with the charges.
