A Springfield man has been sentenced to 17 to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from running from police, crashing into another vehicle, leaving the scene and other charges.

Tremaine Thompson Jr., 22, was sentenced July 1 after he pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular assault, failure to stop after an accident, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, obstructing official business and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office began their investigation into Thompson on Oct. 5, 2019, after deputies attempted to pull him over after he ran a red light and fled, Clark County Prosecutor Daniel Driscoll said.

“After less than a mile, he crashed into another vehicle with four people inside. Two of those people sustained serious injuries because of the wreck,” Driscoll said.

Thompson crashed near the intersection of South Limestone Street and Johnson Avenue. After the crash, Thompson, who was unhurt, ran away. Deputies searched his vehicle and found a stolen loaded handgun under the driver’s seat, Driscoll said. A warrant was then issued for Thompson’s arrest.

Eight days later, on Oct. 13, 2019, Springfield Police Division officers found Thompson in the 1200 block of Clifton Avenue and he ran again, according to an affidavit filed in the case. One of the two officers involved in the foot chase suffered minor injuries to his shoulder, arm and knee during the pursuit.

He was taken into custody in the 100 block of Rice Street, an affidavit stated.
