Springfield man charged with attempted murder in shooting

UPDATE @ 2 p.m.

A Springfield man has been charged with attempted murder and felonious assault in connection with the shooting of another man in the face.

Christopher Hughes, of Springfield, was shot in the face as he sat in a car in front of his home on Beverly Drive late Thursday night. He remained in Miami Valley Hospital on Friday afternoon, but his condition wasn’t available.

Police arrested Charles E. Brown, 44, of 810 Isabella St., about 1 am. Friday, just a few hours after the shooting. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in a Clark County Municipal Court and is booked in the Clark County Jail on a $75,000 bond, according to court records.

Hughes was able to give Springfield police information about the suspect before he was transported to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, according to a court affidavit.

The victim told detectives that he was parked in his car on a driveway and talking to his girlfriend when Brown allegedly came up to the car, pointed a handgun at him and fired once, hitting him in the left side of the face, the affidavit says.

The girlfriend rushed into Hughes’ home and told other witnesses he was shot, but then disappeared when they went back outside to help the man, the witnesses told detectives, according to the report.

Police later located Brown and the girlfriend together, court records say, and arrested Brown.

No gun was found when Brown was arrested and he agreed to undergo a gunshot residue test and have his phone confiscated, police said.

“It’s very very important that witnesses get involved to help us close a case like this, especially that quickly,” said Lt. Jeff Myer of the Springfield Police Division.
