Springfield man accused of fleeing police appears in court

A Springfield man appeared in court on Friday after he allegedly led police on a high-speed chase with his wife and her two children in the vehicle with him.

Not guilty pleas were entered for Chadwick Carpenter on charges of abduction and fleeing from police. Those are third degree felonies that each carry a potential penalty of three years in jail and/or a $10,000 fine.

According to court documents, police tried to pull Carpenter over in Springfield on Oct. 25 because he had outstanding warrants for child neglect. When he didn’t stop the vehicle a chase ensued, expanding into other parts of Clark County. A court affidavit says that at times, he hit speeds of 120 miles per hour.

Court documents say the pursuit was eventually called off, but U.S. Marshals did raid Carpenter’s home in the 400 block of Linden Avenue on Thursday. He was arrested later that morning by the Springfield Police Division. An affidavit says that Carpenter’s wife told police that after the chase was over, the family stayed at a hotel out of Springfield before returning a few days later.

Carpenter also faces a charge of obstructing official business. His bond for all charges total $20,000.
