Springfield police began their investigation when they noticed a commotion on the 500 block of Selma Road at around 7 p.m Monday while driving to a different call, according to a police affidavit filed with the charges.

“I slowed down to see what was going on when I saw a female … bleeding profusely from her mouth,” the affidavit written by a Springfield police officer says. “Her entire face was covered in blood and there was blood on her arms and chest.”

The officer saw Cooper walking down the street without a shirt on and carrying an aluminum beer bottle and stopped him, according to the affidavit. He told the officer that the woman tried to bite his finger off, the affidavit says.

He was then detained, according to the affidavit.

When the officer returned to the home the woman told him that the two were arguing over grocery money, according to the affidavit. The woman wanted to go shopping with him and her mother because she did not trust Cooper with money, according to the affidavit.

“(She) was afraid that Mr. Cooper would take the money she gave him and spend it on dope,” the affidavit said. “(She) advised Mr. Cooper became extremely agitated and confrontational when she wouldn’t give him the money.”

The woman said she grabbed a skillet to protect herself because Cooper had hit her in the past, the affidavit said. The woman told police Cooper then began hitting her with a closed fist and then with the beer bottle, the affidavit says.

“Mr. Cooper was able to wrestle the large skillet away from (the victim) at which time he struck her in the face with it,” the affidavit said.

The altercation led to multiple injuries to the woman, according to the court document.

“(The victim) had multiple misplaced teeth which were a result of Mr. Cooper striking her with a closed fist, an aluminum beer bottle and a large skillet,” the report says. “(The victim) also had multiple lacerations to the inside of her mouth. (The victim’s) left cheek was also severely swollen.”

Cooper had scratches on his arms and his back, according to the affidavit. He later told officers the woman also head-butted him, the affidavit says.

A next court date for Cooper was not immediately available in court documents.
