On July 31, a 16-year-old girl was discovered hiding in the bed of a truck parked in Mattern’s driveway, the report stated. A little more than a week later, on Aug. 10, a Springfield man filed a petition for a protection order against Mattern on behalf of his daughter.
The man requested protection based on his claim that inappropriate physical contact occurred between Mattern and his daughter at Mattern’s home.
Mattern declined to comment, and his attorney could not be reached Wednesday.
Mattern pleaded not guilty Tuesday to all five counts of violating the protection order and was released on $25,000 bond Wednesday, according to court records. He served three years in prison after pleading guilty in 2001 to three counts of sexual battery.
Mattern, a former cross country coach at Shawnee, was accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl in 1996. He was released from prison in January 2004 and placed on post-release control, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.
One of the conditions of his parole was that he was not permitted to attend school events unless his children were participating and he was with his wife, Debra Mattern, who is an assistant treasurer for the district, said Clark-Shawnee Local Schools Superintendent Debbie Finkes.
“Any time he ever has been on school grounds, his wife has been with him,” said Finkes.
When she learned of the July 31 incident, the district banned Mattern from any district property under any conditions, Finkes said, adding that a letter was sent to Mattern on Aug. 1.
Tim Mattern was not approved by the board to volunteer or interact with athletes but was allowed to attend track meets as a spectator where his wife worked as a pole vaulting official and his son, Jason, was an assistant coach, said Finkes.
Mattern’s post-release control was lifted in January of this year.
