Second sex misconduct accusation filed against Indian Valley teacher

A second protection order request has been filed in Clark County Common Pleas Court against an Indian Valley teacher accused of sexual misconduct with student.

Second-grade teacher Larry Yowler is named in a protection order request filed Thursday alleging that he inappropriately touched a child at the school. Yowler’s attorney, Samuel Petroff, couldn’t be immediately reached for comment Thursday evening but had released a statement before the Springfield News-Sun uncovered the second allegation.

“Mr. Yowler has done nothing wrong,” the statement says. “He is dedicated to the teaching profession and has been so for the past 20-plus years.”

Yowler has been on paid leave since Jan. 24, pending the outcome of the first protection order request, according to a letter from the district to him. The board of education considered a resolution to place him on unpaid suspension and begin termination proceedings at an emergency meeting Tuesday but tabled a decision on that.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office has launched a criminal investigation into Yowler but no charges have been filed.

In the second protection order request, a woman accuses the teacher of misconduct with her daughter, who’s described as an older Indian Valley student who served as a teaching aide.

“Mr. Yowler has on multiple occasions hugged the minor child while grabbing minor child’s buttocks,” the protection order request says. “Mr. Yowler on multiple occasions has tried to physical force the minor child to sit on his lap.”

Yowler allegedly also asked the child to brush his hair, the second protection order request says.

“Mr. Yowler on multiple occasions has given minor child lower back (into buttocks area) and shoulder rubs,” the request says.

The second protection order request also accuses Yowler of trying to weigh the student against her will.

“Mr. Yowler has also requested minor child read to him while he sat behind his desk,” the request says. “Minor child has witnessed Mr. Yowler place other female students on his lap behind his desk. Minor child has also witnessed Mr. Yowler force others onto the scale.”

In the first protection order request filed in January, a mother accuses Yowler of touching her daughter’s private area and making her sit on his lap during reading time. A court hearing on that first request will be held Friday.

A hearing has been set for the second request on March 5.

Three parents — two of whom said they have children in his class — spoke to the school board Wednesday night before the second allegation surfaced and defended Yowler.
