15-year-old girl stabs 13-year-old cousin in face in Springfield

A 15-year-old girl stabbed her 13-year-old cousin and seriously hurt her, according to Springfield Police Division.

The grandmother of both girls talked about the incident that happened at her house on West Grand Avenue Sunday.

Connie Trent, the grandmother, finds herself in a tough spot. She said she loves both of her granddaughters, but said someone needs to be held accountable.

“My one granddaughter come running out blood everywhere,” Trent said.

She said her 15-year-old granddaughter stabbed her 13-year-old granddaughter — just missing her eye.

“So I was saying thank God she didn’t, thank God she didn’t stab her in the chest or something like that,” Trent said.

The 13-year-old only needed stitches, according to the grandmother. The police report describes “serious visible” injuries to the girl.

The argument between the two teens started over something one of the girls said to the other on Facebook, Trent said.

“They don’t think. When they go do stuff like this, they don’t think. They just react,” Trent said.

Police began investigating the incident when they were called at around 4 p.m. Sunday to Springfield Regional Medical Hospital. There they spoke with a 13-year-old victim, the police report says.

The girl told police that she and her 15-year-old cousin had been arguing for a few days over things the 15-year-old had been posting on Facebook, the report says. The victim said she was standing in a corner of the room holding a knife because she was fearful that her cousin was going to attack her, the report says.

“At this time (the 13-year-old) stated that (the 15-year-old) charged towards her while she was standing in the corner of the room,” the report says. “(The 13-year-old) then stated that (the 15-year-old) took the knife out of her hand at which time she stabbed her in the head just below her left eyebrow.”

She said the two began fighting until she realized she was bleeding, the report says.

It was then she went outside to get her mother’s attention. The adult took her to the emergency room, the report says.

Springfield police said photographs of the girl’s injuries were collected and the girl required stitches, the police report says. The report says the girl suffered “serious visible” injuries.

However, no one was arrested in connection with the incident due to a lack of an independent witness, according to the report.

Trent disagrees with the police division’s decision and says her granddaughter should face charges.

“I feel like she shouldn’t get away with it,” Trent said. “What if she goes out here and stabs somebody else and causes serious damage?”
