Dispatch activated an emergency tone drop to officers about a male that had been shot at an apartment in the 1900 block of Wilkes Drive, according to a Springfield police report.

Multiple officers responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. while others checked the area for the suspect.

“Officers were advised that the suspect fled the scene in a black pickup truck towards East Home Road,” the report says.

While at the hospital, the victim told officers he has had ongoing problems with the suspect, identified as Gary Osborne, the report says.

He said he was outside in front of his apartment talking to a friend when he saw a man walking towards him with a hoodie and red ball cap on. Due to prior incidents, the victim said he was able to identify the man as Osborne.

“He advised that the male pulled out a black and silver handgun with his right hand,” the report says. “(The victim) stated that the man shot him once in the left leg and took off running towards the entrance of Ronez Apartments on East Home Road.”

Officers later got information that Osborne gave the gun used in the shooting to someone who hid the weapon at a different apartment on Wilkes Drive, the report says.

Police responded to the apartment, and the woman who answered the door and let them search the residence.

“Officers located a black safe in a bedroom closet,” the report says. “Officers seized the safe.”

Police checked the area but were unable to find Osborne.

A warrant for felonious assault was requested for Osborne.
