Police chase ends in crash with driver trapped

SPRINGFIELD — A 19-year-old Plain City man led Ohio State Patrol troopers on an early morning chase Tuesday after a traffic stop that ended with the man crashing his vehicle and ending up in the hospital.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to free Steven Lotter from the 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis he was driving after he crashed it at McCreight Avenue and went down an embankment, said Ohio State Patrol Sgt. Terry Bush.

Bush said Lotter took off after a trooper tried to make a traffic stop on Ohio 4 at Croft Road at 2:39 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2. Lotter was heading south but turned onto McCreight where he lost control going about 70 miles per hour, Bush said.

The car Lotter was driving went off the left side of the road and hit a stop sign, causing it to turn over and go down an embankment, trapping Lotter behind the dashboard. Lotter was wearing a seat belt, Bush said.

Lotter was taken to the hospital in stable condition and is expected to be treated and released, Bush said.

Bush said he believes the car Lotter was driving belongs to his father. He said Lotter would be cited for felony fleeing, driving outside marked lanes, not having an operator’s license, and failure to control his vehicle.
