NEW DETAILS: Prosecutor blasts prison officials in death of inmate

Killing occurred somewhere between Columbus and Chillicothe

The inmate who pleaded guilty a week ago to murder in the slaying of his cell mate at the Lebanon Correctional Institution in February is alleged to have murdered another inmate last week while they were being transported from Franklin County to Ross County.

Casey Pigge, 29, is accused of choking to death inmate David Johnson on Wednesday while they were riding in an Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) bus transporting them after medical treatment in Columbus, Ross County Prosecutor Matt Schmidt said today.

“The fact that he was left alone with access to other inmates is beyond me. I’m completely amazed this was allowed to happen,” Schmidt said.

“This is one of those… I’m still just amazed. After just being convicted in Warren County,” Schmidt said.

Reports of the incident were circulating Friday in Warren County.
