The pedestrian crashed into the windshield of a van, shattering the glass. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was in critical condition when he was transported, King said.
“It is unclear right now whether he was crossing the street or walking along the side of the street, but he did appear to be wearing some kind of dark-colored clothing,” King said.
Clark County Sheriff’s deputies, Bethel Township Fire Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the accident.
The intersection is not well-lit and there are no cross walks at the intersection, King added.
A rescue helicopter was requested but was forced to cancel its landing due to heavy rain. The injured man was transported by ambulance to Miami Valley hospital.
The single vehicle involved, a minivan, was damaged and a child in the van was initially believed to have been injured by flying glass.
The child was checked out by emergency rescue personnel at the scene and found to have no injuries. The child was released to the parents.
The accident occurred in front of Park Layne Pizza and Sports Grill, a restaurant and drive-through.
About 2 years ago, King said, a fatal accident occurred on South Dayton Lakeview Road just south of Gerlaugh Road when a pedestrian was struck by a car.
