Man sentenced to six years in robbery of Clark County pharmacy

A man was sentenced to six years in prison in connection to a Park Layne pharmacy robbery.

Jamical Betts, 19, was sentenced on an aggravated robbery charge and a gun specification charge this week in Clark County Common Pleas Court. Judge Richard O’Neill imposed the sentence.

“I’m happy with the sentence and thankful we were able to do our part to take this individual off the streets,” Clark County Prosecutor Dan Driscoll said in a statement.

Betts was originally charged with numerous felonies in connection with the armed robbery. He pleaded guilty in late November to the aggravated robbery charge and the gun specifications.

However, in December, Betts attempted to change his plea in the case. His motion to withdraw his guilty plea was denied by O’Neill this month.

Betts was convicted of robbing the Park Layne store with Cameron Redd, 19. Redd was sentenced to three years in prison in connection with the crime on Tuesday.

During the robbery, one of the men went in and passed the pharmacist a note demanding a long list of drugs, according to law enforcement. The man threatened to have a gun — and use it — if the exchange didn’t go smoothly, according to deputies.

The men made off with the drugs, which were never recovered, authorities say.

Redd and Betts were eventually taken into custody in Middletown after police say they robbed a Rite Aid there, asking for the same items by way of another note.

Redd was sentenced to three years in prison in connection with their crimes.

The two men are facing more charges in connection with pharmacy robberies in federal court as well. The day before Betts was sentenced, it was announced that Redd, Betts and seven others were indicted in connection with a string of pharmacy robberies.
