Man fires shotgun after police respond to domestic disturbance in Springfield

UPDATE @ 12:14 p.m.:

A Springfield man was arrested accused of firing a weapon as the officer tried to speak with him on Pine Street Thursday night.

Michael Green, 31, of Springfield, was charged in Clark County Municipal Court with having weapons under disability, abduction and obstructing official business. Green appeared in court Friday morning but his hearing was continued and a bond was not set.

Springfield police began their investigation when they were called by a neighbor who told them that Green’s girlfriend had told her that she felt unsafe. When officers arrived Green told them he was drunk and he wanted them to leave, according to an affidavit filed with the charges.

“Officers observed a female inside the residence visibly upset and crying,” the affidavit says. “Officers asked if everyone was okay and Michael stated that nothing happened that we needed to ‘get the (expletive) off his property.’ ”

Officers said Green slammed the door in their face. Officers said they walked to the sidewalk and began formulating a strategy when Green came back outside while he was on the phone with dispatch. The affidavit says Green was requesting a supervisor to come to the residence.

“Mr. Green continued to yell profanities at the officers while still on the line with dispatch,” the affidavit says.

A short time later officers said they heard Green tell dispatch that he would shoot the officers if they didn’t leave and the officers began requesting backup. As more officers arrived they heard Green tell them he did not want to speak with them and slammed the door shut again.

“Officers then heard the back door open,” the affidavit says. “Once opened officers heard the sound of a round being chambered into a shotgun. Seconds later a shot was fired to the rear of the residence in an unknown direction.”

Shortly after the gunfire, Green sat down on his porch and was arrested without further incident, police said.

Officers spoke to the woman they saw crying on the couch when they first made contact and were told, according to the affidavit, that she was instructed by Green not to say anything to police and that she was in fear for her life.

Green’s next court date had not been set in the case.
