Man accused of Walmart jewelry theft

A Springfield Twp. man was arrested on theft and vandalism charges after he allegedly dismantled a store’s jewelry display case and attempted to take merchandise valued at more than $2,000.

Daniel Cupps, 24, of 3200 E. National Road, was charged by Springfield police Sunday. The attempted theft occurred at the Walmart on 200 S. Tuttle Road. A store manager told officers he witnessed Cupps break three locks on a rotating jewelry display case, removing items from each of the sections. Officers located Cupps in the sporting goods section of the store and found numerous pieces of jewelry and gloves inside his pockets, according to the report.

In addition, police reportedly located four stolen memory cards on Cupps. He also allegedly switched out his work boots with a pair of tennis shoes he was wearing inside the store when he was approached by officers.

The store estimated the damage to the jewelry case to be approximately $200. The total value of the property Cupps allegedly attempted to steal was $2,102.96, according to the police report.

Cupps was charged with misdemeanor counts of theft and vandalism. He was ordered into Clark County Municipal Court on Monday but did not appear for his arraignment. His hearing was continued to Tuesday. If Cupps does not appear, a warrant will be issued for his arrest, court officials said.
