Police responded just after 3 p.m. to the school and placed it on lockdown.
The report indicated that a student had apparently shown a firearm to another student after the junior high school dismissed for the day, and that the student, a female, made the comment they were going to go to North Elementary School to “deal with an issue,” according to a police report.
However, the student who reported the information gave police several false or conflicting statements and police have not been able to confirm there was a firearm involved.
Within an hour of the report, police determined it was safe to begin releasing elementary students to parents or guardians and to get students onto buses.
Police will continue to investigate the incident.
FIRST REPORT
Urbana North Elementary School was locked down late Thursday afternoon after police received information about a potential threat of a gun being brought to the school.
No one was injured and authorities said the lockdown ended shortly after 4 p.m. Students have being released home, Urbana Police Division Chief Matt Lingrell said. He said the lockdown began sometime between 2:30 and 3 p.m.
A student at another school in the district told police that another person may have been heading to the elementary school with a handgun, but Lingrell said no evidence has yet been found to substantiate that report.
“We have a bunch of names and we’re going two by two trying to talk to everybody,” Lingrell said.
Police are still investigating the case and few additional details were available Thursday evening, although police said they are still looking into numerous leads.
“We don’t think anybody is in any danger whatsoever,” Lingrell said.
