Grand jury to hear Enon Beach shooting case today

ENON — Investigators have completed their review of the New Year’s Day shootout at Enon Beach Recreation Park that took the life of Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Suzanne Waughtel Hopper and killed a resident of the campground, Michael Ferryman.

Hopper’s family is looking forward to putting this chapter of their lives behind them.

“What happened (the day Hopper was shot), that will finally be closed,” said Marie Lungren, Hopper’s sister. “... but we probably won’t be done dealing with this for a long time.”

Evidence from the shooting will be presented 8:30 a.m. today to a Clark County Grand Jury, according to the Clark County Prosecutor’s office. The department has scheduled a press conference for Friday to release to the public evidence and information compiled in the case.

Incidents in which law enforcement officers use deadly force are presented to grand juries as a way of reviewing whether officers acted properly.

“We’ve been waiting to take this to the grand jury and explain what happened on that day and why we did what we did, and how we did it,” said Sheriff Gene Kelly. “We’ve been looking for the opportunity to show the grand jury.”

On New Year’s Day, Hopper responded to a call of shots fired at the Enon Beach Recreation Park, a campground at 2401 Enon Road. While she walked among trailers investigating a trail of footprints she was shot dead by Ferryman after he opened his trailer door, according to initial reports of the incident. Law enforcement officers flooded the scene and a shootout between Ferryman and officers ensued. In the exchange of gunfire, German Twp. Police Officer Jeremy Blum was wounded. Ferryman was found dead in his trailer after the exchange of fire.

A joint press conference is being held at 9 a.m. Friday by representatives of the Clark County Prosecutor¹s Office, Clark County Sheriff¹s Office and Ohio Bureau of Investigation & Identification.
