Crash involving deputy, pedestrian at fair investigated

A Clark County Sheriff’s lieutenant might be cited for an accident that occurred during the Clark County Fair.

Lt. Chris Clark, head of the investigations unit, was driving through the fairgrounds about 11 a.m. July 24 at about 5 mph, according to sheriff’s records, and collided with a 68-year-old woman. Witness statements are conflicting about whether Clark hit the woman or the woman ran into the vehicle.

The woman said she had been running to tents to tell people to move to the Youth Building in the wake of approaching storms. Several witness accounts say the woman ran between two vendor booths in front of the Youth Building and collided with the vehicle.

The crash report indicates that Clark asked for a medic to look at the woman’s injuries. She was not taken to the hospital at the time of the accident.

Ben Hunt, human resources administrator for the sheriff’s office, said the report will be looked at by the Clark County prosecutor to determine if Clark will be cited.

“We don’t want to make that decision because of conflict of interest,” Hunt said.

As far as any future disciplinary actions for Clark, Hunt said the department doesn’t comment while investigations are ongoing, but any discipline would be minor.

Clark remains on active duty.
