Ohio State Highway Patrol focuses on teen driver safety

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is focusing on teen driver safety.

The leading cause of death in teens are motor vehicle crashes from following too close, failure to yield and improper lane change.

Drug and/or alcohol impaired driving were factors in two percent of at-fault teen driver crashes, but in fatal crashes, 18 percent of those at-fault teens were impaired.

In Ohio from 2016 to 2018, teen drivers were involved in 132,163 traffic crashes, and an action on the part of the teen contributed to 68 percent of those crashes. Crashes where teen drivers were at fault resulted in 251 fatalities and 37,428 injuries.
