Miami U to partner with Wittenberg U on graduate degrees

Miami University announced a partnership Tuesday with Wittenberg University that will allow students a faster way to get a master’s degree.

Undergraduate students studying at Wittenberg in Springfield will be eligible, immediately, to apply for a new program that allows them to simultaneously pursue a master’s degree from Miami University while working on their bachelor’s degree. The partnership will also allow students to complete an undergraduate and graduate education in just five years; normally it takes six years.

Wittenberg, a private university, doesn’t offer many graduate degrees.

The program will be the most comprehensive graduate degree agreement Miami has signed with another higher education institution. Wittenberg students will be able to apply to more than 23 majors, such as accountancy, history, computer science and theatre.

“It’s an excellent recruiting tool for us,” said Jim Oris, dean of Miami’s Graduate School, in a statement. “And, it allows Wittenberg to offer additional value to their students.”

Local universities have established such partnerships in recent years. Miami University has a partnership with Mount St. Joseph University for graduate degrees in computer software engineering. University of Cincinnati has also established a program that guarantees admission for select Cincinnati State Technical and Community College students who earn a 2.0 GPA or higher.

“Institutions of higher learning constantly need to look for ways to meet the needs of students,” said Wittenberg Interim Provost and Professor of Psychology Mary Jo Zembar in a statement. “Wittenberg is fortunate to have a partner institution like Miami University that values the skills Wittenberg students bring with them to a graduate program.”
