Claude Carl Woody Woodward was born in Shelby County, Ohio in 1890.
Around 1900, he moved his family to Dayton, where he worked on the railway.

Around 1920 he came to Springfield with his wife Bessie and son Robert and opened Woody's, a lunch counter at 12 N. Fountain, shown here in January 1921.

By 1930, he had moved back to Dayton, where the family ran a restaurant for many years on West 5th Street.
