A Walmart post on its product-recall web site showed that no Walmart store in Ohio sold the Marketside Butcher Organic Grass-Fed Ground Beef beef from the lot produced June 1, 2020, which was the target of the recall of raw ground beef patties and products by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The products were, however, sold in Walmart stores in West Virginia, Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, Vermont, and Puerto Rico. The full list of Walmart retail stores that sold the recalled beef is available on Walmart's web site.

The USDA’s recall alert also listed a second brand in addition to the Marketside products sold at Walmart stores: Thomas Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef patties, along with an apparently unbranded product called “Value Pack Fresh Ground Beef 76% Lean/24% Fat.” It was not immediately clear whether any Dayton-area or southwest Ohio retail outlets carried any of those recalled products. The full list of retail outlets that sold the potentially contaminated beef has not yet been posted by the USDA.

Two grocery chains with a strong presence in the Dayton area and southwest Ohio, Kroger and Meijer, have made no mention of the Thomas Farms or Value Pack recalled products on their recall-alert web sites.

Nearly 43,000 pounds of raw ground beef patties and products distributed nationally — including one brand sold at Walmart stores — have been recalled because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced late Saturday night.

The USDA classified its action as a “Class I” recall, the highest-risk classification, meaning it represents “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.” However, the potential contamination was discovered during routine FSIS testing, and there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the recalled beef, the USDA said in a release.

One of the brands recalled, Marketside Butcher Organic Grass-Fed Ground Beef, is sold at Walmart stores. As of this morning, Sunday June 14, neither the USDA nor Walmart had posted a list of specific stores that carried or stocked the recalled beef.
The raw ground beef products were recalled by Lakeside Refrigerated Services in Swedesboro, N.J. All were produced on June 1, 2020.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide, the USDA said. Here is a list of the items that are subject to recall:

-- 3-lb. vacuum packages containing three 1 lb. pieces of “MARKETSIDE BUTCHER ORGANIC GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN / 7% FAT” and a use or freeze by date of 07/01/20 and lot code P53929-70.
-- 1-lb. tray packages containing four ¼ lb. pieces of “THOMAS FARMS GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF PATTIES 85% LEAN / 15% FAT” and a use or freeze by date of 06/25/20 and lot code P53944-10.

Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health-care provider, the USDA said. E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly form of bacteria that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps between two and eight days (three or four days on average) after consuming the product.

While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure that can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5 years old and in older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
