Bath Twp. worker on leave after snow plowing damages headstones

A Bath Twp. worker is on paid administrative leave after more than 40 headstones were knocked over from snow plowing last week at Byron Cemetery.

The cemetery, at 3256 Trebein Road, was closed for two days while the headstones and monuments, some weighing hundreds of pounds, were reset into the ground.

Cemetery Supervisor Teresa Phillips said the pathway was cleared by the plow, but the weight of the extra snow on top of the headstones caused the damage.

Township officials said they are looking into whether the driver followed policy.

Three of the headstones need repairs, some need to be resealed and some others need vases replaced.

The repairs and other work will be done once the weather improves, officials said.
