A German Twp. trustee died this weekend.

Charles Metzger, 78, of Springfield died on Saturday at SOIN Medical Center, according to his obituary.

In addition to being a German Twp, trustee, Metzger was also a retired Navistar employee and member of St. Teresa Church in Springfield, according to his obituary.

In a posting on St. Teresa’s publication section of their website, prayers were asked for Metzger last week, as he was “being treated for COVID and pneumonia.” It is not clear if this was Metzger’s cause of death.

Metzger was also a member of the Dayton Motorcycle Club, according to a post on their Facebook page.

“It’s with a heavy heart we say goodbye to life member #8 Charlie Metzger,” the post said. “Charlie has been a member of the DMC since 1968. If you have been to the Lima Half-Mile, Old Time Newsies or just about any other Dirt Track race in or around Ohio over the last 35 years or so you probably saw Charlie watering and working the track. He will be missed by all.”

Metzger is survived by his wife, three children, three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, siblings and close friends. He is preceded in death by his father and grandson.

Due to COVID-19, a private visitation and mass will be held for the family, according to his obituary. Burial with a graveside service will be held at 12:30 on Saturday at Lawrenceville Cemetery.

“A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on the farm at a later date,” Metzger’s obituary says. “In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the German Township Fire EMS or Northwestern Athletic Department.”

The Springfield News-Sun has reached out to German Twp. officials about Metzger’s death but had not received a response Tuesday evening.
