Urbana man arrested on charges involving alleged 13-year-old victim

Urbana Police have accused a Champaign County man of criminal conduct allegedly involving a 13-year-old victim and possibly a second victim in Texas.

George T. Chess, 49, of Urbana, remains in the Tri-County Jail on charges that include pandering obscenity involving a minor, importuning, disseminating matter harmful to a minor and pandering sexually oriented material.

Chess had an initial appearance in Champaign County Municipal Court on Monday and is scheduled to face a preliminary hearing Friday, Aug. 4, according to information from the Urbana Police Division.

Urbana police began an investigation late last week after learning of allegations of possible criminal conduct between Chess and a 13-year-old, police said.

Urbana officers spoke to Chess at his home and later took him to the Urbana Police Division for further questioning, police said. Police also interviewed a local juvenile as part of the investigation.

Police then arrested Chess on Friday and also collected evidence as part of their investigation.

During that investigation, they also learned authorities in Dallas, Texas, were conducting a separate investigation related to possible sexual crimes against a juvenile in Texas.

Law enforcement officials in Texas wanted Urbana police to be aware of that case, police said.
