MORE:Â Springfield shooting occurs as city tries to rally against violence
Springfield Police started their investigation when they were called to a home where a woman said Stillgess had become angry because she was shaving her legs.
“She said he questioned her about it and accused her of going to be with another man,” an affidavit filed with the charges says. “She said she told him over and over that she had a physical in Urbana to go to in the morning.”
The affidavit says Stillgess locked himself in a bathroom and wouldn’t come out. The woman told police she was afraid to go to sleep because she feared he might steal her vehicle so that she couldn’t leave in the morning. She said she questioned him about staying in the bathroom, which caused him to be angrier, the affidavit says.

“She said Mr. Stillgess burst out of the bathroom and charged at her in the bedroom,” the affidavit says. “She said she began backing up away from him and got up on the bed. She said he was yelling at her and then grabbed a phone charger cord and struck her across the arm. We noted the marks that we observed on her arm were consistent with her statement of being struck by the cord.”
The woman said Stillgess then grabbed the machete.
“She stated he then grabbed his machete and pressed it against the right side of her face,” the affidavit says. “She stated he was yelling at her and threatened to kill her with the machete. She said when he quickly removed the machete from her face it caused a small cut on her skin.”
Officers said they saw the cut on her face, according to the affidavit.
A next court date has not been set in the case.
