Police sergeant injured in chase

URBANA — An Urbana man pleaded not guilty to several charges Wednesday after he jumped from a second story window and led police on a brief chase earlier this week.

Chance E. Adams, 42, of 106 Lincoln Place, pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, obstructing official business, abduction and domestic violence in Champaign County Municipal Court Wednesday morning. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 1, and he is being held in the Tri-County Jail.

Matt Lingrell. interim chief of the Urbana Police Division, said officers responded to Adams’ home shortly before 1 p.m. on a report of a domestic assault. Steve Molton, the first officer to arrive, informed Adams he was under arrest for the incident, but Adams instead ran to a second-story window. Molton grabbed the back of his shirt, but Adams jumped about 15 to 20 feet to the grond and ran.

Lingrell and other officers arrived for assistace, and several neighbors pointed out Adams’ general location.

When he was found hiding behind a set of bushes, Adams ran toward Sgt. Seth King, who tackled him, sustaining injuries to the face.

King was treated at Mercy Memorial hospital, but was back to work Wednesday, Lingrell said.

Adams refused treatment for his injuries. Lingrell said Adams has a long criminal history. According to information from Champaign County Municipal Court, Adams has previously been convicted on charges of assault, resisting arrest and menacing.
