Mom who faked daughter’s cancer faces drug charge

SPRINGFIELD — A Champaign County woman convicted in 2003 after duping the community out of thousands of dollars when she claimed her then 7-year-old daughter was terminally ill with leukemia has been arrested on drug charges.

Teresa L. Milbrandt, 41, of St. Paris, was charged Oct. 28 with deception to obtain a dangerous drug, according to court documents accusing her of using unauthorized prescriptions for Vicodin.

Her daughter, Katie Harding, 24, of Springfield, who was not involved in the leukemia case, was arrested on charges of illegal processing of drug documents and deception to obtain a dangerous drug, according to court documents.

In 2003, Milbrandt was convicted of grand theft and child endangerment and sentenced to 6½ years in prison. She was released in February.
