2 men shot during a birthday party in Springfield

Two men were shot early Wednesday morning in Springfield during a large gathering to celebrate a birthday.

Officers were dispatched around 1 a.m. on Wednesday to the area of Clifton Avenue and Rice Street in reference to a large group of possibly 50 to 60 people gathering outside, according to a Springfield police report.

While police were on the way and close by, they heard shots fired.

“Two males had been shot – one in the torso and another in the leg,” the report said.

Both men were taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment.

One of the victims said he and the other victim were at a birthday party when two women started arguing and became aggressive toward each other before he heard the gunshots, the report said.

“(The victim) stated that he and (the other victim) were running through a nearby field when (the other victim) said he had been shot. (The victim) then drug (the other victim) out into the street and began yelling to officers for help,” the report said.

Officers also found one of the victim’s cars with two bullet holes in it, the report said. The victim said he did not know who the shooter was, but he is described to be 5-foot-7, 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Springfield police continue to investigate this shooting.
