Grandfather shoots grandson with BB gun over crushed cans, police say

A 72-year-old man was arrested Wednesday, March 24, after he was accused of shooting his grandson with a BB gun in a dispute over crushed cans.

Earthel Thompson, 72, of Champaign County, was arrested on a charge of felonious assault and taken to the Tri-County Jail after the incident.

Matt Melvin, chief deputy at the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, said the man’s grandson, who is 21, called authorities after the incident. Melvin said the grandson was visiting Thompson when Thompson became upset about crushed cans that were recently stolen from the property.

Melvin said Thompson accused the grandson of stealing the cans, and gave him 10 seconds to leave the home. As he started to run away, Thompson is accused of shooting him with a high-powered BB gun. The BB passed through three layers of clothing and struck the victim in the back. The grandson was treated at a local hospital and released.
