Coach pleads guilty for inappropriate contact with student

XENIA — High school counselor and volleyball coach Brenda Osborne pleaded guilty to one count of sexual battery Tuesday, March 30, for having inappropriate contact with a teenaged student athlete.

Osborne, 43, was charged with three counts of sexual battery in September after admitting, during a police interview, she had inappropriate contact with a student.

Osborne was jailed only briefly and placed on paid leave from her job with the Xenia Community Schools, where she worked as a counselor and volleyball coach. She resigned in October, said Xenia schools Superintendent Jeffrey Lewis.

Police and school officials said a tip led them to begin an investigation of Osborne’s conduct. The incidents occurred July 1 and Sept. 2, though not on school grounds, police said. Osborne had scheduled several hearings, to suppress evidence, that were postponed or canceled.

Osborne is a 17-year veteran of the Xenia district, where she has taught gym and health and also coached basketball. Her personnel file was filled with praise from students, staff and parents.

Osborne’s admission came after a plea deal with prosecutors. They agreed to drop the other two charges if Osborne surrendered her teaching license and is classified as a tier three sexual offender. As part of the deal the Greene County Prosecutor’s office will take no position on sentencing.

Osborne faces as much as five years in prison and $10,000 fine, but could receive five years probation.

A presentencing investigation will be conducted before Osborne is sentenced June 30.
