Bray found not guilty of murder in Knights of Pythias shooting

A man on trial in connection with a fatal shooting at the Knights of Pythias Club earlier this year was found not guilty of murder charges in Clark County Common Pleas Court Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Micah L. Bray, 32, was standing trial on charges of murder, attempted murder, felonious assault, having weapons under disability, carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a firearm in liquor permit premises and tampering with evidence.

A Clark County jury found Bray not guilty of the murder, attempted murder and felonious assault charges, but convicted him of tampering with evidence and the weapons charges.

“We’re obviously very disappointed in the jury’s verdict, but we’ll continue the fight against senseless violence in this community,” said Clark County Prosecutor Stephen Schumaker.

Bray was accused in the slaying of William B. Lewis, 35, at the club in the early morning hours of May 30.

Investigators believed that on the morning of the shooting, employees of the club were attempting to escort Bray out of the club after the staff learned he had a gun.

Bray was accused of opening fire after a confrontation with Lewis.

Defense attorney Jon Paul Rion said Bray did have a weapon, but acted in self defense with no intent to kill.

“Threats had been made against Micah, he attempted to leave, on his way out he was assaulted,” said Rion. “Micah never pointed a gun at anybody, he never raised a gun at anybody.”

Bray is scheduled for sentencing Jan. 8. He could serve up to 11 years in prison.
