Arson, robbery cases proceed

Hearings scheduled in Urbana, Mechanicsburg incidents.

URBANA — An Urbana man will face an arraignment hearing in Champaign County Common Pleas Court this week after he was accused of setting fire to an occupied apartment complex earlier this month.

Court records show Tristain D. Jackson, 19, of 1331 Ohio 55, will face charges that include aggravated arson, underage consumption and possession of criminal tools. He is scheduled to face a hearing at 10:15 a.m. today.

Urbana police officers arrested Jackson earlier this month after he admitted starting a fire in the laundry room at the Stoney Ridge Apartment Complex, 819 Mosgrove St. No one was injured in the fire, but police said more than 20 residents were evacuated from the apartment complex. Authorities have declined to discuss Jackson’s motive for starting the fire.

Two other men were also indicted last week for their role in an armed robbery at the Zoom Zoom Drive Thru, 168 W. Sandusky St. in Mechanicsburg.

According to information from the Mechanicsburg Police Department, Steven P. Rafferty, no permanent address, will face one count each of aggravated robbery and theft. Denvil E. Rose, 29, of 3617 Shrine Road, Springfield, will face one count each of complicity to aggravated robbery and complicity to theft.

Police said Rose admitted driving Rafferty to the business. Authorities have said once there, Rafferty threatened the clerk with a handgun and fled with cash.

Police said they were able to identify Rafferty because he was captured on a surveillance video at the business.
