5 alleged shoplifters busted at Springfield Walmarts Christmas Eve

Numerous alleged shoplifters were arrested at Springfield’s two Walmart stores on Christmas Eve.

Jennifer M. Willoughby, 28, of Springfield; Anthony Joe Kiser, 37, of Columbus; and Jonathan E. Fornwald, 33, of Columbus were each arrested in separate incidents at the 200 Tuttle Road store Wednesday.

Willoughby is accused of trying to conceal two DVDs in her purse, according to a police report.

Kiser allegedly tried to steal clothing items by stuffing them down his pants.

Fornwald could face robbery charges after he allegedly loaded a cart full of clothing and toys and reportedly punched an employee who tried to stop him in the parking lot.

Jeffery F. Ball, 22, and Brock J. Raines, 34, both of Springfield, were arrested in connection with separate shoplifting incidents at the 2100 N. Bechtle Ave. store Wednesday.

Raines allegedly concealed clothing in his pants and Ball allegedly switched price tags in order to pay a lesser amount for several items.

A national Walmart spokesman said Dec. 24 isn’t known to be a more active day for shoplifting, which occurs year-round, but added a large amount of last-minute shoppers could have made for crowded conditions and more opportunity for theft.

“It’s obviously a very high number of customers on a day like that,” Brian Nick said. “But stores haven’t said that was atypical.”

The National Retail Federation says that all property crimes, including shoplifting, increase dramatically during the holiday season, with some cities reporting as much as a 45 percent increase over other times of year.
