Accused “pillowcase bandit” arrested

Four area sheriffs are investigating 29 burglaries in connection with a suspect who has become known as the “pillowcase bandit,” according to Logan County Deputy Mark Brugler.

Allen County sheriff’s deputies arrested Mark Ball, 51, of Lima, last week on a warrant for charges of theft and burglary. Ball has been accused of three burglaries in Logan County, 15 in Auglaize County, six in Shelby County and five in Allen County, all within the past month, according to their offices.

Deputies matched DNA from blood they believe the suspect left at a crime scene, leading to the warrant. Ball allegedly cut his arm on a window he smashed breaking into a home, according to Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish.

Ball has been arrested twice before for burglary and served 11 years, Brugler said.

The suspect has been co-operative, investigators said, and confessed to some of the accusations.

Deputies believe the thefts are drug-related, but Ball has reportedly denied that accusation to detectives and said he steals to provide for his family, according to Brugler.

“I don’t believe that,” said Peggy Fogt, who’s home was broken into recently.

Fogt and her husband came home from church a few weeks ago to find their bedroom torn apart.

Someone had broken into their bedroom window, taken a pillowcase and filled it with money and jewelry.

“They were just grabbing quick I think,” she said.

Ball reportedly told detectives that he only steals money and jewelry, Brugler said, leaving behind appliances and guns that are too easily traced.

“It is just what this guy does,” Brugler said.

Fogt was surprised by some of the things in clear sight in her home that remained after the burglary. Her pillow case was missing, but her husband’s shotgun wasn’t touched.

“I suppose he had to have something to put it in,” Fogt said.

The pillowcases helped deputies link the rash of burglaries, Brugler said.

This arrest will help people in Logan County sleep a little sounder, Logan County Sheriff Andrew Smith said.

“It gives people a peace of mind and that is what we are here to do,” he said.

The Allen County Sheriff said detectives from other counties plan to interview the suspect to see if he could be connected to burglaries in their area.
