Congregations pray together at sunrise

Four churches take part in Enon service

ENON — Parishioners from four congregations greeted Easter with the sunrise during a service at Settler’s Park Sunday morning, April 4.

Enon’s annual Easter Sunrise Service is a decades old tradition, organizers said.

“We had a burst in attendance when we moved it to Settler’s Park last year,” said Dennis Carter of Enon United Methodist Church.

In previous years the service was held at Indian Mound in Enon, he said.

Having the service outside at dawn is a proper setting for Easter worship, said attendee Donna Phipps, of Enon.

“It’s a beautiful service. I like that all the churches participate,” she said. “Being a Christian, it’s what our whole faith is based on.”

Organizers also used a transmitter for the service in case of cold weather, said Carter. Attendees could sit in their vehicles and hear the service over the radio, he said.

“Sort of a drive-in church,” said Carter.

The service was also a time of unity, said Jeff Mohr, Enon United Methodist pastor.

“We enjoy being the other pastors and congregation,” he said.

Members of Enon United Methodist, Knob Prairie United Church of Christ, St. Andrew Lutheran and Maiden Lane Church of God took part.
