Inmate dead, 2 officers injured at Ohio Correctional Reception Center

A 55-year-old inmate of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Correction died in his cell Saturday after he was involved in a struggle that sent two corrections officers to a local hospital.

The inmate, identified as Michael A. McDaniel, collapsed following the struggle at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient and was pronounced dead at Mount Carmel Hospital, according to a release from the ODRC.

The two corrections officers, both women, were trying to remove McDaniel from his cell when he became combative. the officers suffered serious injuries but have since been treated and released, the release stated.

McDaniel declined medical attention following the struggle, according to the prison. According to McDaniel’s online prison record, he began serving a six-month sentence Jan. 26 following an aggravated assault conviction in Franklin County.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.
