The American spirit and the spirit of the holiday season will be part of the next Sanctuary Series event.

The Wittenberg University Choir will perform three sets at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at High Street United Methodist Church.

The event is free, but free-will offerings to support the series will be accepted.

The first set will feature “The American Spirit,” with music from three centuries including Williams Billings, Stephen Foster, Aaron Copland and others. These will include excerpts from “Two Masterworks” and “Sure on This Shining Night.”

Seasonal music will be next up with two arias from Handel’s “Messiah,” and two movements from Schubert’s “Mass in G.”

Rounding out the program will be music of advent and Christmas, with works from Morten Lauridsen, Paul J. and F. Melius Christiansen, and Knut Nystedt.

The Wittenberg Choir is directed by Erik Zinter.

Following the performance, a meet-the-artist reception with the choir will be in the church commons.
