Two Urbana auto dealership legacies change courses as one expands operations while the other closes its doors after 53 years.

In an announcement made by Trenor Motors Inc. owner and president Roger Tehan Jr., his company has added Buick and GMC products to its showroom floor. Trenor Motors purchased both franchises formerly held by Buckles Motors Inc. since 1956.

“We are pleased to be able to keep the GMC and Buick lines in Champaign County and we look forward to serving Champaign, Clark, Logan and surrounding counties in every aspect of the auto business, as well as to continue the fine legacy that Buckles Motors has developed over the years,” Tehan said. “Adding these brands to our long-standing Chevrolet line will bring customers of both products under one roof where we can offer the community a multi-line dealership with full-service capabilities for all brands and models.”

GMC includes Sierra trucks, Terrain and Acadia SUVs; Buick includes the Lucerne, the brand-new 2010 LaCrosse sedan and Enclave SUV.

Trenor Motors began in 1926 when Clem Trenor moved to Urbana from the Columbus area to open a Chevrolet dealership on West Court Street. In 1967, Trenor opened in its current location at 1100 Scioto St.

After his death in 1979, son-in-law Roger Tehan Sr. operated the dealership until his death in 1991, when his son, Roger Tehan, Jr., purchased the family business. Today, Clem Trenor’s great-grandsons Zach and Ryan Tehan are also a part of the family business.

While Tehan is optimistic about the Trenor dealership’s need for additional personnel, he indicates that Buckles employees are encouraged to apply with his company.

“As we continue to grow our expanded product lines, we plan to integrate more jobs into the community,” Tehan said. “The auto industry is recovering and Trenor Motor’s is committed to staying and being an integral part of a prosperous and growing Champaign County for years to come.”
