Dayton Air Show to celebrate 100 years of U.S. Navy aviation

DAYTON — The Vectren Dayton Air Show will celebrate 100 years of U.S. Navy aviation with two performance attractions during the July 23-24 show at Dayton International Airport.

The schedule includes a demonstration flight by the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter, along with a “Legacy Flight of the Super Hornet” in formation with the War World II-era F4U Corsair fighter, air show management said Thursday. The current Super Hornet has been used in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Navy is involved in a series of events this year marking its centennial year of aviation. The crew flying the Super Hornet will come to the Dayton Air Show from the aircraft’s base at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.

The Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration team is the headline performer for the 2011 Dayton Air Show. For information about the attractions and buying tickets, go online to the show’s website at www.daytonairshow.com.

The Dayton Daily News, along with Vectren Corp. and Kroger Co., are among sponsors of the air show.
