Today will be warm, breezy and dry, followed by a rainy night, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Clouds will increase today, and there will be breezy winds, with some wind gusts as high as 30 to 40 mph, especially in the afternoon.

Temperatures will rise to a high in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Overnight, there will be widespread rain showers as a cold front moves into the area.

The rain is expected to break Wednesday morning as the front moves on, leaving temperatures to only rise a few degrees from overnight. However, there will be a second band of light rain, which could change to snow in the evening.

Less than a half-inch of snow is expected to accumulate on elevated or grassy areas.

Any lingering precipitation will taper off overnight as temperatures fall into the mid- to upper 20s, bringing breezy winds for a very cold start to Thursday morning.

The NWS predicted a slight chance of snow showers on Thusday, with temperatures far below normal for the start of April. It will be brisk, the NWS said, with winds gusting between 20 and 30 mph, and highs only rising to around 35 to 40 degrees.

Skies are expected to clear Thursday night as winds fall, and temperatures plummet to lows in the upper teens and lower 20s, approaching record lows for the area – in Dayton, the record is a low of 21 degrees.

As winds drop, the NWS said, frost is likely to form, for a cold start to Friday.
